Prevent Traffic Stops from Taking a Violent Turn

YOU CAN HELP PREVENT TRAFFIC STOPS FROM                    TAKING A VIOLENT TURN

The use of Automated Road Safety Camera Systems (ARTC)  can prevent traffic stops from taking a violent turn. Traffic laws require enforcement to be effective, but we need to feel that all drivers are treated equally.

ARTC provide fairness in enforcement by complementing the work of uniformed officers with a camera system that does not see race, nationality or gender. ARTC have been shown to improve fairness and free up law enforcement to address other types of crime by:

·      providing data to analyze the social and racial impact of their use.

·.    photographing the vehicle, not the passengers within.

·      notifying drivers of the presence of cameras with clearly visible signs.

·      locating cameras with community consent. Community engagement and careful consideration of the placement of cameras are critical for building support.

·      setting out a process by which recipients of citations can protest.

The State of South Carolina does not allow municipalities to introduce ARSC. Please help Citizens for Safe Streets by asking your legislator to approve a bill that would overturn the restriction.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP MAKE SC ROADS SAFER?

  •       Ask your legislative representative to support Automated Road Safety Cameras (ARSC), proven to reduce fatalities and increase road safety. SC is 1 of only 6 states that ban these cameras.

  •       Share this message with friends and family and ask them to contact their legislators.
