Do Automated Road Safety Cameras Invade Privacy?

DO AUTOMATED ROAD SAFETY CAMERAS INVADE PRIVACY?

South Carolina has more fatalities per vehicle miles traveled than any other state in the country, and law enforcement is overburdened and in need of support. Cameras are an attempt to change dangerous driving behavior.

Privacy concerns associated with use of Automated Road Safety Cameras (ARSC) can be allayed if we understand that:

- These cameras are triggered only by a violation of the law. Individual license plates of law-abiding drivers are not photographed.

- Occupants in the vehicle do not show up in the photographs. Only the license plate is shown.

Legislative guidelines can further ensure the integrity of the process by:

- Prohibiting the sharing of traffic camera data and license plate reader data.

- Requiring a signed statement by a duly authorized law enforcement officer that is based upon inspection of recorded images, the motor vehicle was being operated in violation of the law.

- Requiring annual calibration checks on ARSC equipment.

Privacy concerns must be balanced against the loss of life and injuries that occur on South Carolina roads.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP MAKE SC ROADS SAFER?

Ask your legislative representative to support Automated Road Safety Cameras (ARSC), proven to reduce fatalities and increase road safety. SC is 1 of only 6 states that ban these cameras.
